Orthobionomy is an osteopathically-based form of body therapy. By gently replicating the body’s preferred postures using movement and body positions, a change of stress and pain patterns in facilitated that promotes healing, supports the natural alignment process, and engages the body’s self-correcting balance.

Ortho-Bionomy was developed over 40 years ago by Dr. Arthur Lincoln Pauls, D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine). Dr. Pauls combined the structural principles from Osteopathy with energetic and philosophical concepts from martial arts.

“Injury or disease result from what I call ‘misunderstanding’. Ortho-Bionomy brings understanding to the person, so that he or she may respond appropriately, rather than by habit or fear.”*

An Ortho-Bionomy session is a respectful and comfortable “hands-on” experience. Gentle techniques activate self-corrective nerve reflexes, allowing the body to regain its original patterns of health and wellness. Physical and emotional healing occur as the body remembers its natural ability to seek balance by moving from pain to comfort.

Ortho-Bionomy is successfully used to help people with a variety of health complaints including acute injuries such as whiplash; chronic conditions like headaches, back pain and stress; problems associated with postural and structural imbalances, and emotional issues.

Ortho-Bionomy Practitioners are highly skilled professionals who adhere to a strong code of ethics and high standards of practice.

How Ortho-Bionomy Works

The founder of Ortho-Bionomy, Arthur Lincoln Pauls, D.O., described how it works this way: “Injury or disease result from what I call ‘misunderstanding’. Ortho- Bionomy brings understanding to the person, so that he or she may respond appropriately, rather than by habit or fear.” (Pauls, A. audio recording from a course taught by Dr. Arthur Lincoln Pauls, 1980)

The miracle of the body and the treasure of information it holds for us seems limitless. One of the great joys in sharing this work is the self-discovery that takes place for the practitioner, as well as for the client. The nuts and bolts are that the body does have an operating manual, a language, if one is willing to listen. If the oil light comes on in our car, would we put a tape over the light? However, we override our body’s messages all the time. Eventually it gets our attention, but by that time we may have forgotten where the problem came from. This is where Ortho-Bionomy comes in and removes ‘misunderstanding from the body.’

How is Ortho-Bionomy different from chiropractic and massage?

First, let’s define massage therapy and chiropractic.

Massage therapy is the manual manipulation (strokes, stretching, deep pressue) of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments) to enhance a person’s health and well-being.

Chiropractic is a system based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments of the joints, especially those of the spinal column, which are held to cause other disorders by affecting the nerves, muscles, and organs.

There is a common word in the definitions of both of these approaches: “manipulation.” These methods seek to impose external change upon the client.

Ortho-Bionomy practitioners impose nothing from the outside. Instead we use gentle movement and touch to stimulate your body’s self-healing reflexes. In this way, it self-corrects from the inside and better understands its healing process. This provides the opportunity for long-lasting relief and alignment with the added benefit of a deeply relaxing treatment process.

The Principles of Ortho-Bionomy

Ortho-Bionomy is often referred to as ‘the Homeopathy of Bodywork’ because the two modalities share the same principles. Both approaches:

  • exaggerate a pattern to stimulate the body’s self-healing reflexes (let likes cure likes)
  • use the smallest adjustment or dose necessary to bring about a healing response (less is more, the minimum dose)
  • may have an effect within minutes and
  • work on all levels; physical, mental and emotional.

Working within the comfort zone of both the client and practitioner is one of the most important principles of Ortho-Bionomy, as creating resistance and tension is counter-productive. Practitioners follow principles based on respecting, honouring and accepting each individual’s inherent healing wisdom without judgment. Rather than trying to ‘change’ people physically or otherwise, the intent is to help them become conscious of what is going on within their bodies. This increased awareness helps them participate in their own self-correction, and enables them to regain their original patterns of balance and wellness.

How Ortho-Bionomy is Used in a Session

During an Ortho-Bionomy session, the client is fully clothed; the practitioner acknowledges the person’s areas of discomfort, and has the client give feedback in a session to make sure that the work is comfortable. The gentle movements and subtle pressure used result in deep relaxation, and loosening of the tight muscles around restricted areas. Having been activated, the body’s self-correcting reflexes naturally bring the structure and energy back into alignment. Unhealthy tension patterns often resolve, while circulation, flexibility and range of motion increase. Rhythmic movements and isometrics or integrative exercises are used to help re-educate the body and reinforce the work.

Benefits of Ortho-Bionomy

Through Ortho-Bionomy® the body is literally learning, so that the cumulative results tend to be long lasting. Although one or two sessions may relieve specific symptoms, for chronic problems several sessions over a longer period of time may be necessary to release the body’s adaptive reactions, and re-educate it to more natural and healthier responses. The outcome will be higher levels of wellness and resiliency within the body. This light-touch work is a unique system of body re-education for pain relief and self-healing; it teaches people to be more at ease physically and energetically, and may also produce changes in their attitudes and emotions.

  • Stimulates the nervous system; changes can often be immediate and profound.
  • Reduces stress, tension and pain; restores vitality, energy and a feeling of well-being.
  • Relaxes the body so all the systems can function more freely; this supports and speeds healing.
  • Improves balance, posture and range of motion as your body becomes more mobile and flexible.
  • Works well as a compliment to all other healing systems.

I attended Liv Sikomas weekend long yoga nidra workshop and was blown away by the experience. Liv has made yoga nidra a life long practice for me. Combined with her straight forward philosophy teaching, this workshop was the best course I’ve ever had the pleasure to attend. I left with my mind at peace and my heart full. Thank you Liv.

My experience with ortho-bionomy has been immensely positive. I found Liv at a time in my life when I was struggling with work-related chronic pain as well as a very difficult time in my personal life. Despite my initial skepticism I found the sessions extremely therapeutic and I can say without question that they have helped me to overcome a very difficult time in my life. I left each session with a sense of calm stillness and strength which allowed me to overcome the stresses I was facing and get a good night’s rest. I highly recommend Liv to those facing similar obstacles or who simply want to maintain a sense of overall well being.

My experience with Liv and her ortho bionomy treatments has been wonderful. I have had issues with my back (specifically sciatic pain) I have been to doctors, seen a chiropractor and have been to physio therapy, all which have not worked or have provided me with short term temporary relief. After trying ortho bionomy with Liv my back has never felt better. I have full range of motion and mobility without any of the setbacks I have previously experienced. Liv has been very accommodating and took the time to understand my back issues and suggested a course of treatment that would relieve me of my pain. I feel like my old self again, confident and back to my everyday routine. I would highly recommend Liv’s services to anyone experiencing any sciatic pain.

You feel like you are in very capable hands with Liv Sikomas. She has a very casual way about her but in those impromptu moments she is able to impart some really big information in such a way that does not possess dogma, rigidity or unnecessary complexity. The Yoga Nidra and sankalpa practice were very enlightening and all the other bodies of knowledge Liv has her hand in rounded out such a wonderful journey. This was unlike anything that I had done before and doesn’t belong under the blanket title of Yoga, which sadly at times seems to mean a much more physical watered down message. Through listening and various exercises we were able to dig into what makes us tick, what makes the universe ticks and how we fit into it all, simply. It was guided intuitively and focused on developing our knowledge of how to understand nidra and also navigate our energy body and beyond. It felt very complete. Thanks Liv for a very honest and personally transforming weekend.

I have had chronic shoulder pain for years and have tried all the possible treatments out there without any success. I was recommended to Liv to try an Ortho Bionomy treatment and it was something I had never heard of, but read up about it and thought why not!! Its changed my life. After I had the first treatment I noticed improvement and less pain. And it just got better from there. I have mobility back in my shoulder and that is something I haven’t had in years. I am so thrilled to have met Liv. She is very gentle and has such a wonderful energy that I felt so comfortable and safe having the treatment.

"I would attend again and would recommend to others. Liv has created a wonderful body of work from her years of experience. I was struck and significantly affected by the concept of meaning as she described it. Thank you."

Liv, you beautifully integrated your knowledge and wisdom into a profound experience. Your guidance and grace created a space to internalize the many layers of living life well, and through that process we gained insights through the lens of simplicity. The combination of your expansive understandings and the natural progression of the format of your course created and allowed space for me to become lighter. It was realistic and with a little work on my part meditation and stillness will become part of my daily life.

Liv is a professional, passionate, caring healer who has helped create relief in my world of chronic pain. I suffer from herniated, ruptured, degenerative discs as well as cervical stenosis. I also have tendinitis surrounding almost every joint in my body and live at a consistent 6/10 pain level without medication. Since treatments I have decreased the amount of medication I intake and have been able to rejoin certain physical activities I once believed never to be trained again. I am incredibly active and Liv has allowed me to continue to be the being I want to be. I have spent thousands of dollars in treatment looking for the solution externally but through her teachings and guidance I realize the power to heal comes from inside.

Highly recommend; Liv returned a very painful frozen shoulder to 100% where other treatments couldn't
