1. Direct your energy toward what you want, not what you don’t want.

Often when we create an affirmation we begin by thinking of what we don’t like about our lives and we could fall into the trap of allowing that to be the focus. For example, if you wish to overcome a bad habit like smoking and you create an affirmation like “I don’t need to smoke,” or “I am a non-smoker,” we are actually emphasizing the word ‘smoking’. As Einstein said, “You can’t solve a problem from the same level of thinking that created it.” Instead you must rise above the thing you don’t want and recognize what you do want. In this case of quitting smoking you might say, “I am healthy,” “I make my health a priority,” or “I am in great physical health.”

 

2. Word your affirmation in the present tense.

Usually when we want something in our lives we observe it as something “out there” that we want. Another affirmation trap is when we use words like “I will,” “I’m trying,” “I’m going to.” What this phrasing does is always keeps what you want “out there” or “some day.” The law of attraction tells us that we must become the energy we wish to align with. Ghandi said, “Be the change you want to see in this world.” Wishing, longing, hoping, and trying do not allow us to come into the experience of what it is like to have this thing or be that person. Which brings us right into #3.

 

3. You must feel your affirmation deeply.

Whatever your statement is it MUST be something meaningful; something so inspiring that you experience real feelings when you imagine it being true. You say your affirmation to yourself and perhaps it is “I am confident,” then you imagine yourself as a confident person. What does that person look like? How do they feel? What do they sound like, how do they move? When you see all of this, clearly notice the feeling it creates within. Perhaps it is sensation without words or you may be able to identify it as love, peace, security, compassion or excitement. Either way, this connection to a deeper feeling brings your heart into the game and is huge as you begin to live it each day.

 

Follow these 3 simple tips for creating your next affirmation, in doing so you will align your mind and heart to shift you into the state where what you want exists. Then post it up in your house, remind yourself of it daily. Utilize any moment when your mind is calm and still (like right as you’re going to sleep or in meditation) to say it and feel it. Walk down the street and feel it, walk with it and allow it to animate you.
